Aging Safely: Tips for Avoiding Falls

Did you know that over 300,000 adults are hospitalized each year for hip fractures, with 95% of these fractures caused by falls?

Falls are a serious concern for older adults, with over 14 million people over 65 experiencing one every year in the U.S. They’re also the top cause of injuries like broken bones and head trauma, and a bad fall can sometimes lead to losing independence.

At CJFS, we witness the impact of falls firsthand. “Linda”, 78, tripped over a loose rug, broke her hip, and faced months of rehab. While she’s now on the mend, she realized a small change – securing the rug—could have spared her the ordeal. Simple adjustments like removing tripping hazards, installing grab bars, and staying active with balance exercises can go a long way in preventing falls. The problem is significant, but prevention is possible.
