The month of September is full of diverse holidays such as Labor Day and Rosh Hashana, observances such as the International Day of Charity, and light-hearted celebrations, such as Hobbit Day or Batman Day. However, during my review of September observances, I noticed an important subject was not mentioned. September is also Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Despite millions of individuals being affected by suicide yearly, this topic is often difficult and uncomfortable to discuss. But avoiding the topic altogether can lead to taboo misunderstandings, and feelings of sadness and isolation.
So how do we stay aware and discuss the topic of suicide appropriately? For starters, we can simply ask people how they are doing and truly listen to their response. We can provide emotional support to our friends, coworkers, neighbors, etc., and encourage them to seek professional help if needed. And if you happen to be the one going through a difficult time or experiencing suicidal thoughts, remind yourself that you are not alone, and it is okay to ask for help.
In our current culture, asking for help and knowing where to turn, can be a hard and overwhelming process. We at CJFS are here to help you through counseling services, grief support groups, and case management. Call our office today and let us know how we can support you.
