Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the privilege of meeting several older adults as part of our CJFS Personal Care Program assessments. What surprised me was how many of them told me I was the first social worker they had ever met. That realization reminded me just how important it is to explain what we do—and why it matters. For older adults and their families, the role of a social worker isn’t always obvious, but it can make a meaningful difference in daily life, safety, independence, and emotional well-being.
At its heart, social work with older adults is about understanding the whole person. We start with assessment and care planning, getting to know what someone needs, what they want, and what supports will help them thrive. From there, we help connect them to resources—transportation, food support, home care, financial assistance, community programs, or anything else that might reduce stress and increase stability. We also serve as advocates, helping older adults navigate healthcare systems, speak up for their preferences, and make informed decisions. And because life rarely moves in a straight line, we step in with care coordination, family support, crisis intervention, and ongoing emotional support whenever challenges arise.
One client I visited recently—let’s call her Mrs. L—told me she’d been “trying to manage everything on her own so no one would worry.” After talking through her daily routine, it became clear she was skipping meals because grocery shopping felt overwhelming and she didn’t want to burden her daughter, who lives out of state. When I connected her with our Senior Grocery Initiative and arranged a safe-friendly home care plan, her relief was immediate. As I was leaving, she smiled and said, “I didn’t know this kind of help existed. I thought I had to just keep pushing through.” Moments like that remind me why this work matters.
At CJFS, our goal is simple: to walk alongside older adults and their families with compassion, respect, and practical solutions. Whether we’re coordinating care, offering a listening ear, or stepping in during a difficult moment, social workers help ensure that no one has to navigate aging alone. And for many older adults, meeting a social worker for the first time becomes the start of a safer, more supported chapter of life.
