The core Jewish values of CJFS are active principles that guide our operations and services. Our programs and services enable aging-in-place, support mental health and wellness, and build community connections. Our impact is bolstered by our excellent professional staff, our comprehensive, client-centered approach, and our focus on relationships built on compassion and respect. This alignment between values and action is what enables CJFS to fulfill its vision of being a supportive resource for individuals facing life’s challenges.
B’Tzelem Elokim (Honoring the Individual) In Judaism, every person is considered to be made in the image of G-d and should be treated accordingly. CJFS places great importance on treating our clients with dignity and respect. By fostering an environment where every person is valued, CJFS not only supports individuals but reinforces the idea that all human life is sacred.
CJFS services are designed to support independence and honor the self-determination of older adults. At 78, Jane was healthy and independent, when a fall and a broken hip left her unable to drive and unsure of how she could remain living at home after rehab. Her children, successful professionals who were used to being in charge, eagerly wanted to move forward with a full-time in-home caregiver who could take care of issues as they arose. The alternative they believed was moving to assisted living. Jane didn’t like either of those options–or having someone else make decisions for her.
A CJFS Senior Solutions Assessment helped Jane identify the current challenges and resources to address them. Her Case Manager worked with her to explore and set her personal goals and priorities, which in turn helped her frame her decisions about housing, in-home care, and transportation. She felt empowered to voice what she needed and explain her choices to her children, even if they disagreed with some of them.
We look forward to sharing more about the values that shape our work in upcoming installments of The “J” in CJFS.
