June marks Alzheimer’s and Brain Health Awareness Month—a time to reflect not only on the challenges of memory loss, but also on the importance of proactive, compassionate support for those navigating aging and cognitive change.
At Collat Jewish Family Services, we believe brain health awareness doesn’t begin with a diagnosis. It begins with understanding, planning, and connection. That’s where CJFS Senior Solutions comes in.
Take my client, ‘Sherry’ for instance. Sherry’s family had noticed some cognitive changes. When Sherry fell and couldn’t remember how it had happened, her children decided it was time to call CJFS for a home and safety assessment as well as a personalized care plan. Looking not just at how Sherry could remain safe and fall free in her home, the care plan was tailored to Sherry’s goals and her children’s goals. Working alongside the family, we created action steps for the short term, like adding motion detection lights in the hallways and bathrooms, and for the long term, looking at in-home care teams and making sure all the end-of-life documents were in place.
When I was going over the final written assessment with Sherry and her family, Sherry admitted to having been nervous about the whole process. She was concerned that I would “take away her freedom.” But she recognized the recommendations would keep her living at home for longer, and this was her goal. Her children had a guide for the next changes whenever that would be, but they knew we here at CJFS would be there as well.

This month, as we shine a light on the impact of Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders, we also highlight the power of preparation. Support isn’t only about services—it’s about knowing someone is in your corner.
