Why CJFS?

by Lauren Schwartz, MSW, CJFS Executive Director

“I wish I had called you first,” said an adult child after moving her parents from their home of 50+ years when the new care did not meet their expectations. It’s something I hear too often from families struggling to make decisions about managing aging issues. What seems like a simple solution often has hidden complications that are hard to predict, especially since most of us haven’t walked this path before.

Life can bring challenges at every stage and navigating them can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re facing the uncertainties of aging, supporting a child through emotional struggles, or caring for a loved one with dementia, CJFS is here to help. Here are just a few reasons people turn to us:

  1. We’re getting older and don’t want to burden our kids but aren’t sure what steps to take.
As you age, planning for the future can feel like a daunting task, especially when you don’t want to rely too heavily on your adult children. At CJFS, we help you identify what matters most to you. Then we identify options and create a clear plan that honors your wishes and ensures your needs are met, without putting unnecessary pressure on your family.
  2. My 7-year-old has always been a bit anxious, but this school year has started off shaky.
Childhood anxiety can present itself in many ways, and the start of a new school year can amplify those feelings. Our trained counselors work with children and families using evidenced-based strategies and tools to manage anxiety, ensuring a more successful and less stressful school experience.
  3. My loved one with dementia is refusing to bathe regularly.
Caring for someone with dementia can bring unique challenges, and one common struggle is managing personal hygiene. CJFS offers guidance and practical solutions to help caregivers approach these situations with patience and understanding, ensuring your loved one’s dignity and well-being.

Many people in the community have supported CJFS for years, even decades and still don’t think to turn to us for help. Often, they think CJFS is for other folks, but we serve everyone–Jewish or not, with or without financial resources. Our expertise and our caring, committed staff are what sets us apart. If we can’t help you, it is very likely that we know a resource who can. So, call us, we are YOUR place to turn for life’s ups and down.
